Alex initiated and helped me create an Advent wreath for our house. He wanted to light it most nights either during or after supper, and always made sure the correct candle(s) were lit. I also bought a new Nativity set this year, and he is waiting anxiously for Christmas morning to put the baby Jesus in his rightful spot.
As a grown-up getting all caught up year after year in the Christmas hype, it is refreshing to be brought back to the real story. He is a regular kid who can’t wait for Santa, and to him I don’t think there is a contradiction – he is a little human who tries hard to do the right thing just like the rest of us, and he is successful sometimes and sometimes not so much. It’s a true joy though to not ever have had to force him to go to Mass. He is welcomed there each time we go, and serves on the altar at each Mass we attend. Fr. Rob told him this morning that he couldn’t do it without him, Alex nods his head and gets a little red in the face. Church has become another place where I have become known as “Alex’s Mom”. Funny, I used to have my own identity there!
